The Black Maxi OOTD

Gap maxi dress, Brandy Melville bandeau, Club Monaco belt, Zara shirt, Zara bag, Afaze sandals

Apologies for boring those of you who already follow me on Instagram and have seen this outfit of the day already. I thought I would share this for those of you who might not have Instagram since I really loved this outfit. Maxi dresses and skirts are one of my favorite summer time trends but I've only worn them a handful of times. Last year (or maybe it was the year before...) I wore a strapless maxi dress to a movie theater and my outfit got stuck in an escalator and I was almost totally declothed in public.... Accidents aside, maxis are incredibly comfortable, not to mention stylish!

I picked up a basic black maxi (with straps!) from Gap a few weeks ago on sale for $20. They were out of smalls so I went up a size which doesn't quite fit me but I can make it work. I made sure to wear a bandeau since so much skin was being exposed (arm holes were way too large for me) and the floral pattern helps balance out the black fabric. Maxi dresses can be heavy and the top tends to drag and slide downward (thanks gravity) so the belt helps everything stay put. The air conditioning in school is quite powerful so the shirt is a great way of keeping me warm and covering up so I don't look like I'm headed to the beach.

Do you wear maxis? How do you style them? Please share if you've ever had a maxi disaster like me! I'd love a good chuckle!

  1. Love the floral pattern bandeau under the black maxi! I'm still on the hunt for a nice maxi dress and since I'm petite, I don't think I can pull it off =/

    1. I'm so happy with the 2 floral bandeaus I picked up from Brandy Melville. They're super comfy! It's hard to find a maxi that doesn't drag on the floor and I'm 5'5''-5'6''. I wish maxis came in different lengths for each size.

  2. It looks great on you! I love how you were able to make it work for you!
Maxis are always so intimidating on the hangers because of how long they look. I'm short and have yet to even venture that far into the fashion world haha One baby step at a time :P

    1. Thanks Mandy :) It's definitely hard to find maxis for shorter gals but if you can always try altering one! I think it's perfectly fine for petite girls to wear floor length dresses. As long as it flatters your proportions it should be fine! Baby steps are a good way to proceed though :D

  3. That's a very cute outfit and you sure made it work. I love dresses but for the summertime, I prefer them to be about knee length because I get hot and sweat very easily so I don't really like my legs to be completely covered.

    1. Mm, I never really thought about that issue actually! My legs don't tend to sweat much (at least not enough for me to really be concerned) but it's quite airy under the dress. There's enough of a "swish" factor to let my legs breath.
